In the 7th and 8th Centuries the Christians of Asturias held out against the Muslims, eventually driving the invaders away. Following their victory, there began a rich period of pre-Romanesque church building. This Byzantine-influenced church of San Miguel de Lillo, just outside Oviedo was built in the reign of King Ramiro I (842-850).
